All-Star Eligibility

USA Softball employs strict rules surrounding Select play that govern eligibility for All-Star play.

 "Yellow Book" rules:

  • Players must play Select in the age division they intend to play All-Stars in.

  • All players must have played in 75% of their season's rec games.

  • A team shall not have more than four (4) players who played with a travel ball team after January 1, 2023.

  • A player who plays on any team other than their TGS Rec team after March 31, 2023 is ineligible for All-Stars.

  • Players may not practice or play with travel ball teams or travel players after March 31, 2003. This includes some clinics so please be cautious.

  • All players must be registered with TGS prior to April 1, 2023.

  • Any violation of the above rules may make a player, team, or league ineligible for championship play.

FINANCIAL COMMITMENT

  • The initial financial commitment for the 2023 All-Star Season is:
    • $500 for 14u, silver & bronze teams
    • $550 for gold teams
    • The fee includes: USA Softball All-Star membership fee, tournament and administrative fees, field fees, a practice dri fit shirt, two complete uniform kits, and a bat bag or catcher bag. Payment will be due no later than May 16, 2023.
  • Every player is required to purchase a TGS helmet for $75 (price included face mask and stickers). Returning players do not need to purchase a new helmet.
  • Additional costs associated with the All-Star program include travel expenses (such as commuting, lodging and meals), equipment, spirit wear, team swag, etc and may accumulate to an excess of $1,000. All costs are the responsibility of the parent or guardian. Players may fundraise or teams may obtain sponsorships to cover additional costs.
  • There will be lodging and travel costs in San Diego for the Cool Breeze Tournament.
  • Should the team qualify for States or Nationals, participation at those tournaments is mandatory and includes an additional financial commitment, not already outlined above, that may be substantial.

ALL-STAR FAQS

How are players nominated for All-Star consideration?

Recreation Managers nominate any number of players from their team that they deem qualified to be considered for All-Star selection.

How are players selected to be All-Stars?

On or after  May 1st, two representatives from each team (typically the Manager and Head Coach) will meet. Every representative will receive a ballot of the nominated players (who have submitted All-Star Commitment Contracts) and cast their votes. After the selection of the first six (6) players of an Allā€Star team, the All-Star Manager’s daughter is selected as the seventh player to the roster, unless she was previously selected. The All-Star Manager shall then make all remaining selections to complete the roster and submit to the TGS Executive Board for review and approval. The TGS Executive Board has final approval on the formation of an All-Star Team to ensure appropriate representation of TGS. This process continues for each all star team in each age division.

How are All-Star Managers Selected?

Coaches seeking to manage an All-Star campaign must submit an application. A list of All-Star Manager applicants will be distributed to all regular season Managers and Head Coaches. Regular Season Managers and Head Coaches (maximum 2 ballots per team) will submit a ballot ranking the All-Star Manager applicants. The TGS Executive Board will have final determination to assign the role of All-Star Manager to the applicant deemed most appropriate to represent TGS.

We have a family vacation planned for one of the tournament dates listed. Can my athlete still participate in All-Stars?

Maybe. All absences must be disclosed on the All-Star application/contract. The All-Star manager will take that absence into account when making selections for the team.

Will my athlete play in every All-Star game?

Every tournament has different rules. Some tournaments allow for round robin batting, while others mandate a designated player/flex 9 batting order. In other words, there will absolutely be games where your athlete will not play. Play time may be contingent on performance. Parents need to be aware of this before deciding if an All-Star commitment is right for your family.

What is the financial commitment for All-Stars?

Every player will be required to pay an All-Star registration fee. This fee includes the uniform kit, field fees for practice time, tournament entry fees, USA Softball registration, and other small miscellaneous fees. There will also be travel costs, hotel costs, spirit wear opportunities, and other various team requirements. To be candidly honest, the All-Star season is expensive and could top $1000. TGS will offer a fundraising opportunity to offset some of these costs.

What if my athlete's team advances to the State Championships? What if they advance to the National Championships?

All players on teams that advance to the next level of competition are required to compete. Failing to advance will earn sanctions to 2024 teams.  Please take note of potential dates listed above and be sure your athlete is available for States, Regionals, and Nationals. This is a big commitment. Please honor it.
